About the project

The consented Northfleet Green Hydrogen Electrolyser (GHE) production and storage facility is located at Kimberly-Clark's Northfleet manufacturing facility off Crete Hall Rd, Northfleet, Gravesend DA11 9AD in Gravesend, Kent.

The scheme includes electrolysers which will use electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar to split water and create green hydrogen.

The facility will incorporate a water treatment plant and electrical equipment to supply the electrolyser and will include storage tanks to pressurise and store the green hydrogen. The gas is then fed into the industrial boiler through a new hydrogen pipeline.

The manufacturing facility will use the green hydrogen produced, to fuel a new dual-fuelled boiler system, located inside the mill. This new boiler system can operate using hydrogen or natural gas to produce the steam and heat necessary for the paper manufacturing process at the mill and will replace the current boiler which solely uses natural gas. This will help to decarbonise manufacturing of much-loved household products like Andrex®, reducing emissions and boosting energy security.
